Hello my name is Talacia Reynolds, this summer was the first internship I have ever done. When I first arrived, I was actually very bored, there were days we did nothing but one thing and that was it. When we finally got our first fawns, we were so excited.
This is one of the people that I was working with, his name is Justin and he is holding our first little girl. I named her Supergirl, because some of her spots made a huge S. At the time we three little girls, it was a lot harder starting them on the bottle than I thought it would be. I had prior experience with bottle feeding calves but deer are a bit different, I came to the internship expecting to be pretty good at telling if a deer was sick or about to give birth. Boy was I wrong. To the cattle people that are thinking about maybe interning at a deer farm, they are nothing like cows so don’t expect to be able to get them right off the bat. Within my first two weeks after the girls were born, we had over ten fawns to bottle feed. It would take forever and it was so hard trying to keep them from hurting themselves or us when feeding.
This is Cheryl Greiner, she was my boss during the summer, she was the best boss I could have asked for. She took care of myself and the other internship. When everything was said and done, she told me that this was the hardest summer she had ever had. We ended up having to bottle feed over 107 fawns, her normal number of fawns was around 75-80. I enjoyed working here even though the first two months were the hardest things I have ever had to do.
This is a really great internship and I would definitely encourage you to try for it. Be aware though that these are not easy internships, there is a lot of hard work and barely any sleep for the first couple of months. If you believe that this is something that you would like to do, I would highly encourage you to do so.If you decide to try for this internship, you must be able to wear pants pretty much everyday, boots will also be your best friend and your worst enemy. Girls, if you get an internship, wear your hair up. Deer love to eat hair, and will try at any opportunity to chew on it. I lost about six inches of hair to them. This was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done and I miss all of the people I had made friends with, not including the fawns. It hurt to leave them and not now how they were doing.I had busted lips, an earring ripped out , clawed up arms, and huge bruises, but I would do everything over again in a heart beat.
