Hello again, I hope that everyone’s semester is going well. I hope that some of you have seen my former post and are thinking of interning at a deer farm. I will tell you that it will be hard and at times nasty work, but at the same time it is so fun.
The last couple of weeks before I left, was just mainly trying to wean all the fawns and move them to a bigger pen outside of the handling facility. These little one’s were separated from the rest as they had gotten sick and we did not wish for the others to get it as well. many of them though were able to be moved back in with the others before I left. I also spent a lot of time check on the fences and making sure that the older deer were not sick.
If you are looking for an easy internship this is not for you. I cannot stress this enough, many interns abandon the deer ranch before two months are up. The first two months are the hardest part of this internship, once that passes everything is so much easier. This internship will test your patience but it will also expand your horizons. Deer farms are on the rise and it will benefit many of you to have experience with deer, I believe.
I would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Greiner, Toni Gallegos, and Justin Rayes, for allowing me to work with them and helping when I was unsure, afraid of something,or when I had made mistakes. I learned I great deal over the summer and I hope to either return or to intern at another deer farm.
I hope that this has convinced some of you to do the same.
